Health and Social Care Unit 1: Developing Effective Communication (P4)

In this assignment I am going to explain how different strategies are used to overcome barriers in health and social care.

A barrier is something that stops things getting past. The first example of a barrier to communication is aggression. Aggression is the readiness to attack or confront. When someone is aggressive they become very hard to talk to as they are closed and can become withdrawn or violent. This is a barrier because it is hard to engage them in effective communication. One way to overcome aggression is through staff training. For example, teacher can be trained on how to diffuse aggression within a student where they will learn to remain calm in the situation, have a positive body posture and to try and to show respect, understanding and trust before trying to sort out the situation.

Submission is the action of accepting to authority of another person. When an individual is submissive they are also hard to communicate effectively with as there could be self esteem and anxiety issues involved which results in them being a closed book. Submission can be overcome using a human aid to communication such a mentor. For example in the case of a submissive student, the mentor would also use a calm tone of voice and would use probes and prompts to get them to talk about their feelings and problems. Also the mentor will eventually build a relationship with the student which will make the student trust them.

Assumption is a barrier where someone judges or assumes something about someone before understanding the situation or getting to know them. Assumptions can limit the effectiveness of communication and causes misunderstandings. These assumptions cause people to feel upset and disrespected. This is a barrier because there’s a gap in understanding. In order to overcome this barrier, professionals should not judge or assume things about their service users without finding out anything about them first.

Value and belief systems can be a barrier because people have different values and believe in different religions. These can limit the effectiveness of communication because they can cause arguments between individuals as there are many disagreements of how people go about their life and what they believe in. It can cause people to think badly of others. To overcome this barrier, professionals should show that they respect what their service users values and beliefs. They should also try to understand their values and beliefs when communicating.

Cultural variation is the rich diversity in social practices that different cultures exhibit around the world. This can be a barrier because not everyone has the first language and different cultures use different languages and types of jargon and this can limit effectiveness of communication because there is the possibility of misunderstanding. This can cause people to feel frustrated and confused as they can’t get their messages across effectively. All service users language preference should be taken into account as that is part of promoting rights. To overcome the barrier of cultural variation, professionals can use human aids to communication e.g an interpreter or translator so communication can be as effective as possible.

Use and abuse of power is a barrier where an individual uses their power in an abusive way against others such as taking advantage of them and manipulating them. This limits the effectiveness of communication because the victim wouldn’t feel comfortable speaking to the person abusing them with their power. This can affect the victims self esteem and their sense of worth. To overcome this barrier
